This class is for students who show a pattern of significant underachievement in reading. Course objectives for students include developing grade level reading skills and success in content area classes through individualized diagnosis and instruction in reading, gaining skills and knowledge required to pass state-required reading assessments, and review of basic skills. Independent and assisted study opportunities are directed for work assigned in other classes and independent self-selected reading. A typical day starts with 25 minutes of silent reading, followed by 30 minutes of group work (see below) or homework help time.

Read For RealThis group focuses on gaining skills reading informational and non-fiction texts. The students read engaging stories while working on reading strategies to help them focus and comprehend complex informational texts. The group will read their story with the help of a para-educator, practice the strategies, then take a quiz at the end.

Audio BooksOne of the most powerful tools for increasing vocabulary and reading comprehension is through the use of audio books. This way, the students can read along while hearing the pronunciation of new words, as well as a proper rhythm and cadence to reading that will help them gain fluency skills. Kamiakin has an extensive library of audio books and is always adding to it. If you want a book that we don't have, just let us know, and we will try to acquire it.

Guided ReadingThis group will read engaging fictional stories that are meant to challenge them in comprehension and critical thinking. While reading these stories with a para-educator, the students will be asked critical thinking questions that push them to higher levels of thinking. These skills are crucial to understanding the literature they will be reading in 10th grade, and at higher levels.
